Samsung to start making chips faster than ones in Galaxy S8

Posted by on 19 April, 2017

This post was originally published on this site

Samsung is now ready to produce faster and even more power-efficient chips than the ones it uses the latest Galaxy S8 smartphones.

In the fourth quarter, Samsung will start producing chips on the 10-nanometer LPP (low-power plus) process. These chips are faster than existing chips because of an enhanced 3D structure.

On average, the new chips made on the new process will be 10 percent faster and 15 percent more power efficient than the first wave of 10-nanometer chips like the Samsung Exynos 8895, which is one of two processors used in the S8 devices.

Can the enterprise save Facebook bots?

Posted by on 19 April, 2017

This post was originally published on this site

Facebook’s bumpy introduction of bot capabilities inside its Messenger service may be saved by an unlikely candidate: business users.

While the company’s bot platform for consumers has been more widely discussed than its business counterpart, support for automated conversation partners also extends to the company’s Workplace service for businesses. In that context, users can interact with bots to perform functions at work, like getting a budget approved by their supervisor.

Business-focused bots have more utility than their consumer counterparts at this point, said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. It’s one thing to run through an expense report with a bot, and quite another to order a pizza. There’s also more room for an imperfect user experience in the land of enterprise software, in Moorhead’s view.

New web portal opens for 5G experimenters

Posted by on 19 April, 2017

This post was originally published on this site

Got a fantastic, futuristic 5G wireless application you need to try out, but you need an FCC license to start testing? It’s about to get easier to get a program experimental license, thanks to a new web portal announced days ago by the FCC, in partnership with NYU and the University of Colorado Boulder.

The idea is to make it simpler for research labs, universities, manufacturers and others to obtain the necessary permission to test new devices, while also ensuring that existing services aren’t impacted by testing.

Licenses should be issued within 15 days in most case. The first 5G testing license issued through the new system went to NYU Wireless, a research center based at the university’s Tandon School of engineering.
